Today I wanted to talk about an important topic as a mom – self care! Self care is so important in our lives (in general) but, especially as a busy mom. It can be so hard to take care of ourselves when so many others demand our attention, as well as daily tasks. I’ve recently started to understand this a lot more. However, you can’t pour from an empty cup. It is so important to take a few minutes each day, and do something for you. Because you owe it to yourself to pour that same love and effort as you do in all other things right back into yourself.
How do I make time for myself with two little ones
With my oldest being 5, and my youngest being 1.5, the age gap has helped make things a tad bit easier. But nonetheless, they still are little and both depend on me for a lot. Since Honor is in school full-time, that does leave me with a decent window of opportunity to be able do things for me, while still keeping a routine for Valor.
The kids – well more like Valor, has me up at 5 am Monday through Sunday. Usually I’ll put on a cartoon for him while I give myself about 30 minutes to adjust to being completely awake. Our days are usually jam packed with routine during the week, and activities on the weekends, so often times it can be a struggle to put anything first as a mom. Between being exhausted by the end of the day, and so zoned in on everyday tasks, it is easy to forget to do something for myself.
How I make Time for Myself
It’s generally impossible to even attempt personal time if the kids are awake. On a few occasions where they’re both having their breakfast quietly, I’ve noticed a five minute window where I can just enjoy my morning cup of coffee and quickly fill in my five minute journal. But that’s not always the case.
So I focus on the hours of the day when Honor is at school, and Valor is asleep – Or after they’ve been bathed and put down for the night. Nap time isn’t always a dependable time since the time frame can vary depending on how Valor is. One thing I do want to start incorporating is a plant based diet & yoga practice (not exactly sure how to go about that..). But baby steps, it’s all about baby steps.
- journal what I’m grateful for in my 5 minute journal
- write down any tasks that need to get done
- make sure to get my workout in the mornings
- reading inspirational quotes
- get any social media content ready for the next day
- spend some extra time on my nightly skin care routine
- whiten my teeth
- Watch inspiring YouTube videos
- Meditate using headspace
Tiny Moments that Add Up
So one thing that is for sure is the habit of going to the gym I have created. It took several months to get to this point, but I at least know that this is my one constant I have to ensure I am pouring back into myself. While often times a workout isn’t always as productive or great, I can always count on my 10 minutes sauna session post workout to give me the mental clarity and peace I need to take tackle the rest of the day.
Learning how to capture those tiny moments across an entire day is what really adds up. I constantly remind myself that I can do hard things and know that I’ll have my “me” time soon enough.
It’s never picture perfect or situationally ideal. But this is what I have learned works for me. Some day the kids will be all grown up, and I won’t have the blessing in disguise of being “busy”. So I try to value that and find joy even when I feel like I’m losing all my marbles.
